Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about our classes and what to expect.
What is the difference between an HQL and a Wear and Carry Permit?
In Maryland, a Handgun Qualification License (HQL) is required to purchase a handgun. A Wear and Carry Permit allows you to carry a handgun in public. They are separate applications with separate training requirements.
How long are the courses?
Maryland requires a minimum of 16 hours of training for an original Wear and Carry Permit and at least 4 hours for the HQL. Both must be taught by a Qualified Handgun Instructor.
Does the course include live fire?
Yes. Both Maryland courses include a live-fire component at a range in Severn, MD.
Do I need any experience?
No. All experience levels are welcome, including complete beginners. Classes are small so we can go at a pace that works for you.
What should I bring to class?
Contact us before your class date and we will send you the current list. Get in touch.
Which other states accept your USCCA course?
Our USCCA-taught training is accepted for permits in Virginia and Florida. Other states may accept it as well. Requirements vary and change, so confirm with the state's issuing agency or ask us.
Is a Maryland permit valid in other states?
Some other states honor a Maryland Wear and Carry Permit. See the USCCA reciprocity map for current information.
How do I sign up?
Classes we have scheduled are listed on our USCCA registration page. If you do not see a date that works, call 301-337-9050 or email info@phalanxdefensemd.com and we will arrange one.
